Betting Notebook: PSL Final Matchday

The final round of PSL fixtures takes place this coming weekend, with six games kicking off at the same time on Saturday afternoon.

Sekhukhune & Stellies will both be hoping to secure 3rd place and a CAF spot, while the battle for the Top 8 is most fascinating, with two spots up for grabs over the next few days. At the bottom of the table, Cape Town City will also be fighting for survival, and are still not down and out yet. Betting Notebook is a statistical preview of the PSL weekend.

AmaZulu v Orlando Pirates

Pirates are already guaranteed 2nd place for a 3rd consecutive season, while AmaZulu have also secured a return to the Top 8 after a two-season exile. That does not mean there is nothing to play for, however. Pirates will be aiming to set a new club record of 20 wins in a PSL season. AmaZulu know that whatever position they finish in this season will determine who they face in the Top 8 next season. Should they slide down to 7th or 8th, they will be drawn against Pirates or Sundowns, something Arthur Zwane will want to avoid. One defeat in eight home games is a solid foundation to build on. Yet Pirates (60% to 20%) are favoured to walk away with the points, and when you look at the history between the sides, you understand why.

22 – Orlando Pirates are unbeaten in 22 games against AmaZulu (W13 D9 all comps since August 2013) – currently their longest unbeaten run against any PSL opponent.

Cape Town City v Stellenbosch

Eight seasons ago, Cape Town City were the leading light for football in the Western Cape. Today, Stellies have taken that baton, flying the country’s flag in continental tournaments and producing players that catch the eye of talent scouts at home and abroad. Unless Cape Town City win this one, they may find themselves wading off relegation in a four-match playoff next month. With one win in 14 league matches (D4 L9), it’s no surprise City are longer odds for this (3.5/1) compared to their neighbours from the winelands (2.2/1), but some value bets in the goals market exist. The Citizens also bear psychological scars of recent meetings with Stellies, with a single point picked up out of the last 24 available in this tie.

0 – Stellies are unbeaten in eight games against City, winning seven and drawing just one.

Kaizer Chiefs v Polokwane City

Seldom has a game carried more importance in the Top8 race than this final-day showdown between Kaizer Chiefs and Polokwane City. City come into this clash in the driving seat, knowing that a draw will be enough to secure a place in the top half of the table, so they may be tempted to keep it tight. For Chiefs, only a win will guarantee the same outcome, though a draw and some other favourable results may suffice. At 1.8/1 for the win, Chiefs are quite the heavy favourites compared to their visitors (5/1). Both teams have had horrible runs of form in the last few months, although the Chiefs’ Nedbank Cup victory may provide the confidence boost that is desperately needed.

24 – These two sides have one win each in the last 24 games involving both sides.
