Without further ado, let’s get straight into the action and go through the 10 International Matches.
Montenegro v Azerbaijan (Saturday)
With just two games into the UEFA Nations League, Montenegro are in a comfortable spot in League C Group 1, winning both of their opening encounters, scoring three goals, whilst they’re also yet to concede. Azerbaijan have just three points from their opening two matches. Both of Montenegro’s games have been away from home, now, on home soil for the first time, they should continue their winning ways.
Spain v Switzerland (Saturday)
Spain will be looking to live up to the expectation of being one of the Nations League’s tournament’s favourites when they look for their second win in League A Group 4. In their previous two encounters, Luis Enrique’s side got a point in Germany and hammered Ukraine 4-0. Switzerland, on the other hand, impressively held Germany to a 1-1 draw on home soil, but were humbled 2-1 by Ukraine, who, as mentioned, were thumped by Spain. The Swiss will also be without Xherdan Shaqiri who tested positive for COVID-19.
Faroe Islands v Latvia (Saturday)
Faroe Islands have shown early signs of being the favourites to qualify from League D Group 1, claiming maximum points in their opening two matches, being the only team to win so far in the group. Latvia are second behind the hosts but have drawn both of their encounters against the same opposition who came out second best against the Faroe Islands.
Brazil v Bolivia (Saturday)
The early hours of Saturday morning will see Brazil hoping to kick-start their World Cup qualifying campaign off on a high note as they square up to the lowest ranked team in South America, Bolivia. Brazil are ranked third in the world and are number one in the CONMEBOL rankings. The five-time World Cup winners have a star-studded squad, headlined by Philippe Coutinho and Neymar, and are the defending Copa America champions.
Colombia v Venezuela (Saturday)
Colombia have a fairly favourable tie in their opening World Cup qualifier against Venezuela who are 15 spots below them in the latest FIFA rankings. They are ranked 10th in the world and have one of the best squads in South America, including the likes of James Rodriguez, who has come to life again at Everton, Davinson Sanchez, a Jose Mourinho favourite at Tottenham, and Luis Muriel, a striker at Atalanta, who are known for scoring plenty of goals. The Colombians seem to be on the rise again, whilst Venezuela’s best player, Salomon Rondon, looks to be on the decline in his career since moving from the English Premier League to China.
Republic of Ireland v Wales (Sunday)
Wales couldn’t have asked for a better start in League B Group 4, winning both of their opening two encounters by 1-0 scorelines over Finland and Bulgaria. All this without superstar Gareth Bale, who still is not match fit yet. The Republic of Ireland are currently bottom in their log standings with just one point from their opening two games, losing at home to Finland, who lost to Wales recently.
Norway v Romania (Sunday)
Norway will have another chance to showcase their talent when they host Romania this Sunday. The Norwegians sit second in League B Group 1 of the Nations League, behind Romania, who are unbeaten with four points in two games. What’s been impressive about both sides is their ability to find the back of the net. Norway, spearheaded in attack by Erling Haaland, won 5-1 away last time and had to dig deep to win 3-2 in Austria.
Scotland v Slovakia (Sunday)
Scotland seem to be on the right track again and will certainly fancy their chances against a Slovakia side who haven’t quite got going yet in League B Group 2. The Scots have amassed four points from their first two games, famously beating the Czech Republic away last time. They are now suffering with a few absentees after Stuart Armstrong tested positive for COVID-19. While those who came in close contact with him will have to self-isolate as well. Slovakia are winless from their opening two matches and lost 3-1 at home to Czech Republic, who, as mentioned, were trounced by Scotland.
Greece v Moldova (Sunday)
Russia will be hoping to continue their blistering start to the second edition of the UEFA Nations League as the 2018 FIFA World Cup hosts look to continue their run of back-to-back wins from their opening two matches in League B Group 3. The Russians have beaten both Hungary and Serbia, scoring three goals against each of them. On the other hand, Turkey are yet to break their duck, failing to score in both of their opening ties.
