It’s grass court season and time for strawberries and cream as the 2022 Championships begins on Monday 27th June and finishes on Sunday 10th July.
Last year, Ashleigh Barty won her first Wimbledon Ladies Singles title in 2021 defeating Karolina Pliskova. She’s retired now, so we will have a new tennis champion. We highlight the tournament favourites ahead of the action at Wimbledon.
Iga Swiatek
Swiatek enters Wimbledon as the clear favourite to scoop the women’s title. The 21-year-old recently won the French Open and is on the hunt for a second Grand slam title this year. But it won’t be an easy task, Swiatek has to adapt to her least favourite surface…grass. She is just 4-4 in her career on the surface, and while she’s a better player now than she was in her previous trips to the All England Club, Swiatek’s decision to skip grass-court tournament preparation after winning Roland Garros could prove costly
Ons Jabeur
Jabeur will want to put all of the disappointment of crashing out of the first round of the French Open behind her. In her last four tournaments, Jabeur has managed to win two. Most notably when it comes to grass, Jabeur may has one of the most effective slice shots on the WTA Tour now that defending Wimbledon champion Ashleigh Barty is retired, her powerful serve is also a big plus. Jabeur offers excellent bang for the buck at her modest title odds, especially considering she defeated Swiatek at Wimbledon last year en route to the quarterfinals.
Coco Gauff
Coco Gauff keeps giving the tennis fans classic performances whenever stepping on to the court. The 18-year-old American came close of claiming her first Grand Slam title when losing to Iga Swiatek in the French Open final in Paris. Then followed up her loss with the semi-final result in Berlin on the grass court where she lost to Ons Jabeur in Halle Open. The key to Gauff defeating top-ranked players will be her serve.
Emma Raducanu
It’s difficult to understand what goes on inside Raducanu’s mind at the moment. Raducanu has only lasted 33 minutes on Grass Court this season when retiring during Nottingham Open due to injury. Many expected her to compete in Eastbourne Open but she bypassed the tournament to protect herself and give herself time to recover completely. The British star player will hope to provide some electrifying performance in front of the home crowd like she did last year. At least she is protected against tough opponents as she is seeded inside the top 10 in the main draw.
