The oldest Tennis Championship, the Wimbledon Open, is set to resume on the 1st of July and the headlines have been dominated by Andy Murray who is going to make his final appearance in the tournament, despite not being at his best form and still in doubt whether he will play as he is racing to get fit after suffering an injury. The 37-year-old Tennis Ace limped in the Queen Championship round of 16 match against Jordan Thompson last week to put the farewell party in a shaken position. Then to make it worse, over the weekend, several British publications ran a story confirming that he has withdrawn from taking part in the third Grand Slam of the year.

Neither of the news were confirmed to be true as yet as tennis fans across the globe still eagerly waiting to say Final goodbye to one of the best players to ever grace the game. There is no doubt neither the argument that in the last 15 years, Murray has been a wonderful player to watch on the court and one of the top performers as such. He dominated tennis alongside Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal – tennis fanatics ended up calling them the Big Four. He has three Grand Slams career titles under his name. In Wimbledon Open, Murray has a piece of history under his name. Twice he has managed to emerge victorious there which happened in 2013 and 2016. His first title though 11 years ago was a bit special and remains one of the greatest British sporting achievements. He faced Djokovic in the final which he managed to overcome in a straight set to become the first British player to win the title after Fred Perry achieved the feat in 1936. Plus becoming the first Scottish player to win a Wimbledon trophy since Harold Harmony in 1896.

Even though there were signs of him making progress in terms of performing well in major events he arrived into the match not as the favorite with all eyes on Djokovic to win the title. That happened even though Murray was the losing finalist from the 2012 edition of the event. But he delivered the classic performance to make a mark as one of the world’s leading tennis players. Then his second title in 2016 neither came as a surprise as he was already on top of his game. Since that title, the decline phase of his game has hit him hard. The injuries especially on the hip, forced him to undergo several operations which has robbed the fans across the globe to witness one of the special talents on the court. At times, Murray has indicated his plans to retire from the game but his love for it has made him a warrior. He is determined to not allow injuries to stand in his way. His fight has inspired many people to believe in what they do.

He might not be at his best but the former world no 1 has amazing achievements which other players dream about. Plus he has inspired a lot of young tennis players in the world. As he prepares to make a Wimbledon stage one last time, It is also a good reminder that his last good major performance came in the same tournament where he reached the Quarter-finals in 2017 before injuries persisted. This year in Grand Slam, he hasn’t gone past the first round which put him not even near being the favorite on home soil. But for him, it is not about winning as already his legacy is doing the talking. He is celebrated for a reason and for the wonderful performances he has delivered. It is also not usual to see a player with a quality backhand as Murray. There is no doubt, that the fans will remember him as one of the players they have enjoyed watching and his Wimbledon legacy will live on.
