The semi-final second legs take place tonight with four teams left to battle it out for a place in the final.
Eintracht Frankfurt v West Ham
Despite not doing well in the Bundesliga this season, Frankfurt has been an amazing team to watch in this year’s European competition – they surprised many when eliminating Barcelona in the quarter-finals. They enter the match with a 2-1 advantage after winning against West Ham in England last week. Frankfurt never suffered elimination in the European competition in the knockout stages after winning away from home. They have progressed six times from those instances.
Frankfurt is aiming to reach their first European final in 41 years when they played against Borussia Dortmund in the 1980/81 Uefa Cup which they eventually won by 1-0. They are on the verge of being the first German side to with both the UEFA Cup and Europa League. The last team to advance to the Europa League after suffering a home defeat was Liverpool ( 3-1 against Villareal in the 2015/16 season). Before this season only four out of 17 have managed to overturn the home deficit and reach the final of the showpiece. West Ham has never won a match in Germany in three attempts- they suffered losses against Dortmund and Frankfurt while obtaining a draw against FC Magdeburg. In their professional history, Frankfurt has only lost one match at home when they have entered the semi-finals stages in 12 matches. Their last semi-final clash at home resulted in a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the 2018/19 season in the same competition.
Frankfurt is expected to finish the job here, especially with a good track record at home.
Rangers v RB Leipzig
Rangers will hope the home-ground advantage plays a huge role when welcoming Leipzig in the second leg of the Europa League semi-final clash. Rangers come into the match trailing 1-0 after the defeat in Germany a week ago. This is the first time that Rangers will play these opponents at home in history. Prior, the home side has welcomed three German opposition and they are winless in all those matches with the last match being a 1-0 loss in 2008 against Werder Bremen. Rangers are playing European competition semi-finals for the first time since April 2008, in the previous 5 attempts they have progressed to the final four times.
Only Porto ( 5/6) and Sevilla ( 6/6) have a higher progression rate in the semi-finals of the European Competition. The last time Leipzig played in Scotland, they suffered a 2-1 loss to Celtic during the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League group stages.
Rangers will be firing on all cylinders at Ibrox Stadium and I tip them to win this match.
