The Premier Soccer League festival continues starting tonight with live action on every single day of the week. Things are starting to pick up after a rather slow start, where we saw just five goals in the opening five games. We’ve now been treated to 13 goals in the next five. Teams are starting to adjust in the Biologically Safe environment and perhaps, we will start to see more goals. With the first game of the week starting tonight, we ran through the numbers to bring you some stats that can be a useful betting guide.

Monday 17 August

Cape Town City v Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns visit Cape Town City at Loftus Stadium this evening. The Brazilians will be looking to get their first league win of the restart. But they come up against a side that has given them plenty of problems in the past. Since they joined the PSL in 2016/17, Cape Town City have beaten Sundowns on four separate occasions in the league. No other side has beaten Sundowns more than them.

Sundowns will want to break a run of two successive draws that threatens to derail their title race. Chiefs comeback win over the weekend stretched the gap between them and Sundowns to six points, and Pitso Mosimane’s men will want to narrow that gap. The last time they drew three league games in a row was in 2016/17, surrendering their league title to Wits in the process. Will that happen again, for the first time in three years?

Chippa v Highlands Park

Chippa host Highlands Park on Tuesday afternoon at Orlando Stadium. Since they were first promoted in 2016, Highlands Park have won their of their five league clashes against Chippa (60%), their second best win percentage against any side (67% v Baroka is their best).

Bidvest Wits v Golden Arrows

Golden Arrows’ struggles away from home continued when they lost 1-0 to Stellenbosch on Saturday. They have beaten just two teams (Baroka twice and AmaZulu) in away games since Steve Komphela joined the club in December 2018. They play another away game against Wits, at the FNB Stadium. Arrows have beaten Wits once in their last 20 league encounters since 2009, presenting another hurdle for Komphela’s men  to overcome.

Orlando Pirates v Baroka FC

Pirates are struggling to score goals. They have now failed to score in four successive games for the first time since 2016/17. This current run includes three successive 0-0 draws. But if there is one encounter where there should be some goals, it is the Pirates-Baroka one. All matches between the two sides have seen both sides scoring – there has never been a clean sheet in this fixture. We think another goalless draw is highly unlikely.

Also, although Pirates failed to score in their last game against Wits, they had many shots and some dangerous ones close to goal. The shot map above shows not only the number of shots they take, but also the location of those shots. Ricardo Goss (Wits keeper) was kept very busy all afternoon, and was even awarded Man of the Match. Should Pirates continue fashioning chances, and perhaps getting closer to the goal, the goals should come back for Golden Boot race leader Gabadinho Mhango and company.

Supersport v Polokwane

Polokwane City have now lost their last nine away games in a row, and travel to Bidvest Stadium to take on Supersport. Their away form has not been helped by the fact that they have failed to score in five successive away games, a first in their history as a top-flight club. However, Supersport have not beaten Polokwane in any of their last five league meetings either, so this could be very tight. In addition, Polokwane also really need to win and escape the relegation zone, after bottom club Black Leopards won over the weekend to draw level with them on 23 points.

Bloemfontein Celtic v Kaizer Chiefs

Historically, this is one of Chiefs’ favorite fixtures. Title chasing Amakhosi have beaten Celtic 22 times in the PSL era, and there is no other side they have beaten on more occasions. They have only lost once in 20 league games against Celtic going back to 2009. Their recent record, however, has been somewhat mixed. Chiefs have won just one of their last five league matches they have played against Celtic. Even in that one victory, they needed to comeback from a goal down three times in the match in order to win 5-3.

Stellenbosch v Cape Town City

The two Western Cape sides will play their derby in Gauteng. They have only met once in the past, and Cape Town City won that match 1-0. Both sides also won their opening games in the restart, and both won 1-0. Will there be another 1-0 win?
