Opta Jabu is back with a PSL Betting Guide ahead of this weekend’s DStv Premiership round of fixtures, headlined by the Soweto Derby.
SuperSport v Maritzburg
The last time Maritzburg won away to SuperSport, Gordon Igesund was SuperSport coach, while Steve Komphela was at Maritzburg. Five different coaches have tried and failed across seven years, including Fadlu Davids (twice) in 2018. A month ago, I’d have fancied him to end this wretched record, but things have spiralled a bit in recent weeks. SuperSport are at 1.74 for the win here, the best odds for any home side across the division all weekend. Despite their own mild troubles (one win in six), we’re inclined to go with the home win here too.
0 – SuperSport are the only team yet to lose a home league game this season and can mark 12 months unbeaten in a home league game if they avoid defeat here.
Kaizer Chiefs v Orlando Pirates
Things are looking grim for Arthur Zwane at the moment. Chiefs have won just one game all year, with 17% their second-worst win rate in the first two months of the calendar year in PSL history. 2015 remains their worst start, but even so, they only played twice by the end of February that year.
They just don’t seem to have the cutting edge up front, blanking in four of the six games, despite averaging 16 shots per game during this time. When a defender (Sfiso Hlanti) is your top goal scorer seven games into the year, it spells trouble. Yet, the team always finds a way to turn it on for the derby.
1 – Chiefs have lost one of the last nine Soweto derbies that they came into on the back of a defeat.
Sekhukhune v CT City
Only Sundowns (27) have won more points in the league since the World Cup than Sekhukhune United (16). It’s not really a surprise seeing them favoured here, albeit just, and their 6-0 Nedbank Cup win was another reminder of their newfound prowess under Brandon Truter.
Meanwhile, City continue to blow hot and cold this season and followed up their Nedbank Cup exit with a win this past week. You have to go as far back as August/September last year for the last (and only) time they won back-to-back league games this season. That also included their only away win this campaign.
5 – Only Swallows (4) have won fewer points on the road than City this season (5).
AmaZulu v Royal AM
This is a huge game between teams that are separated by one point on the table and a few kilometres on the ground. Win this, and Royal AM will open the gap between their neighbours and also complete the double over them. Win this, and AmaZulu will leapfrog Thwihli Thwahla on the table, and get their first-ever league win over Royal AM. Problem is, Usuthu haven’t kept a clean sheet since the start of the year, and the 4-0 win over Chiefs is starting to look like an exception, not the norm.
0 – AmaZulu are the only top-flight team yet to score a goal in a league game against Royal AM since they became a top-flight club.
