The famous Friday nights at Harry Gwala Stadium are back for Maritzburg United, who host Supersport United. The Team of Choice are desperate for a point, never mind a win, if only to halt the downward spiral that has recently seen Eric Tinkler lose his job. If you’d asked Caretaker Coach Delron Buckley where and when he would prefer to play his first game, he would probably have chosen this weekday and this ground.
Friday Night Lights?
20 – Maritzburg are unbeaten in 20 league games played at Harry Gwala Stadium on a Friday night, a record going back to September 2017 (Won 13 Drew 7).
Indeed, they also drew the only bio-bubble ‘home’ game they played on a Friday.
Milestone
Buckley’s first task is to bring to an end a run that has seen Maritzburg lose seven consecutive losses in all competitions, their worst losing run in their PSL history. In the absence of the vociferous crowds, one wonders if the advantage of playing under the Harry Gwala lights will still hold.
They can count on how Supersport have been consistent in their inconsistency, with their last eight league games reading: WIN, LOSS, WIN, LOSS, WIN, LOSS, WIN, LOSS. A win for Kaitano Tembo’s men here would continue that rhythm, bring up an important milestone:
299 – Supersport have won 299 league games in PSL history, and are one win short of becoming just the 4th side to amass 300 league wins.
Matsatsantsa Loves KZN
The Maritzburg fixture is their favourite league fixture on the road, and Supersport have lost just once away to The Team of Choice since 2005. In that time, no team has beaten Maritzburg on their own turf more than Supersport has (8 times).
1 – Supersport have lost just one of the 14 matches played away to Maritzburg in the PSL, with the 7% loss ratio their lowest against any opponent away from home.
Poor Away Form
Be that as it may, Supersport themselves are on a run of four successive away losses, their worst away run since 2014 and only the second time in the 30-game PSL era that they have lost 4+ league games in a row.
5 – A fifth successive away loss would set a new record for Matsatsantsa’s worst run away from home in a single PSL season.
Goals
Supersport have also scored in 13 of the last 14 league matches against Maritzburg, failing to score only once, and we see that run continuing here. Bradley Grobler and co. have found the net in 11 of their last 12 league games since the end of February. In concert, Maritzburg have not kept a clean sheet in seven league games, and eight games in all competitions.
3 – Supersport are one of only three sides to have scored in every league game they have played this season, alongside Pirates and Golden Arrows.
