Chiefs v Sundowns Preview

Any PSL team that travels to Sundowns in the last five years of their supremacy always travels hoping that a win will positively change the narrative around their season. But to win here takes more than hope, it also takes bravery. This also applies to Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs, whose turn it is to travel to the four-time champions this weekend.

Yet, no team has had as much fortune playing Downs as Chiefs – who have beaten Sundowns 21 times in league matches, the most of all PSL sides. The record is similarly impressive when Chiefs are on the road.

10 – Sundowns have lost more HOME league matches against Chiefs than any other opponent in the PSL (10).

More recently, the teams met in the MTN8 quarter-final, with Chiefs coming from two goals down to take the tie into extra time. Downs progressed in the end, but this Chiefs side became the first team in PSL history to come back from 2-0 in a game against Sundowns and force the tie into extra time. It’s the type of bravery teams need when travelling to Chloorkop.

5 – Chiefs are unbeaten in five away games at Sundowns (W3 D2, all comps since 2016), their longest run without a loss away to Downs in PSL history.

The bravery is also exemplified in Chiefs’ scoring record in this fixture. The last time Chiefs failed to score in a league game away to Downs was in February 2013, in Stuart Baxter’s first season at the club. The penalty against AmaZulu aside, Sundowns have scored just once in 270 minutes of action across all competitions (Pavol Safranko’s late scrappy goal against Golden Arrows in the MTN8).

1 – Only once in Baxter’s first spell did this fixture produce over 2.5 goals.

Improving on their defensive displays from the 2-2 draw in the MTN8 may be the main priority in this one.

The third indicator of Chiefs’ bravery in this league fixture can be seen in how many times they have scored first away to Sundowns. In the last ten seasons, Chiefs have travelled to Sundowns and scored first eight times out of ten, with Downs opening the scoring only once in that time. Only one match was a 0-0 draw.
