DStv Premiership Midweek Stats

Lightning strikes twice

1:07 – Terrence Dzvukamanja’s opener for SuperSport v Chiefs after 67 seconds was the joint-earliest goal scored this season. 24 hours earlier, Ntsako Makhubela had also scored after 67 seconds for Swallows v Stellenbosch.

Arrows mount a comeback

3 – This was only the third time in PSL history that Arrows came back from a half-time deficit away from home to win a league game:

  • Feb 25, 2006, won v Maritzburg under Khabo Zondo
  • Apr 3, 2013, won v Chippa under Manqoba Mngqithi
  • Sep 19, 2023, won v Cape Town Spurs under Khanyeza

Arrows have started the season well

14 – Arrows have 14 points from 7 games to start the season. Only once before (15 points in 2008/9) have they started the season with a better points total.

Sundowns equal a record

31 – In beating Orlando Pirates last night, Mamelodi Sundowns equalled the record for longest unbeaten league run in PSL history (now at 31 games; P31 W25 D6 L0 since September 2022).

Sundowns near a record

7 – Sundowns have a 100% record in the league so far this season (P7 W7 D0 L0), just the 2nd team in PSL history to win each of their first seven league games of a top flight campaign (also 2014 Chiefs, who ended on 8 wins).

Pirates hoodoo continues

26 – Orlando Pirates have now lost 26 league matches v Sundowns, more than against any other opponent in PSL history.

Chiefs hoodoo continues

22 – Kaizer Chiefs have now lost 22 league games against SuperSport, more than against any other PSL opponent.

Chiefs slow starts to the season

8 – Chiefs have accumulated 8 points frm 7 games this season, exactly as they had last season (also 8 points from 7). Starting seasons slowly seems to be a recurring theme:

SeasonPlayedPoints
2023/2478
2022/2378
2021/2279
2020/2176

Cape Sides still struggling for a win

0 – Cape-based top-flight sides have not won any of the 13 games they’ve played across all competitions in over a month (P13 W0 D2 L11, since Stellies beat Royal AM 3-1 on 18 August).

Spurs waiting

1 – Cape Town Spurs are the only team yet to win a league game this season (P6 W0 D0 L6) & are the 2nd side in PSL history (after 1999 Bush Bucks) to start a top-flight season with six straight losses. Howevrer, Bush Bucks were not relegated that season.
