PSL

The final weekend of the PSL is upon us, and we’re here to preview all the action. The big story is Sundowns’ looking to claim a historic unbeaten season, but other intriguing narratives are at play. Five teams can all end up in the 8th spot, including Kaizer Chiefs, while Stellenbosch and Pirates will be playing for second and an automatic spot in the CAF Champions League. All the numbers are here, as we feature some of the coming games.

Sundowns v Cape Town City

Win, lose, or draw, 25 May is Coronation Saturday for Sundowns. The big question is whether they can avoid defeat to become the first-ever team to go invincible in South African football. At 1.1/1 for Downs double chances (win/draw), the bookies certainly think so. Downs could be forgiven for feeling a bit tired after playing 55 matches already this season, so that factor could make it a bit closer than the bookies suggest. We saw on Tuesday how they faced pressure, but maybe that was the lesson they needed on how to handle that. That said, Sundowns has not been a happy fixture for City lately. Not only are they winless in seven games, but they also barely put up a fight in front of goals.

0 – City have failed to score in each of their last seven games v Sundowns, the joint-longest any team has blanked against Sundowns (also Arrows 2016-2019)

Orlando Pirates v SuperSport

These two played out an entertaining game when they last met, with Over 3.5 goals between the sides back in December. Despite conceding an early goal, SuperSport ended up as the winners then, and they are the form team at the moment. A league table in May alone would put them in second place, so you can imagine our surprise seeing 5.5/1 on offer for the away win. 1.6/1 for Pirates seems pretty generous, but there is the intangible factor of having more to play for. Plus, when you look at the history of SuperSport visiting here, that starts to make sense. It’s been over 10 years since SuperSport won a league game away to Pirates (January 2014).

3 – Pirates are playing their final league game against SuperSport for the third time, and they’ve never won when playing MD30 v Matsatsantsa (D1 L1).

Cape Town Spurs v Kaizer Chiefs

Cape Town Spurs have won just five games all season and are already confirmed as relegated. The only saving grace is that four of those wins have come at home, and they will be keen to bow out of the top flight with another major scalp at home. What could be more spectacular than a win against the mighty Kaizer Chiefs (they have already beaten Pirates at home this season)? That said, Chiefs have a lot to play for, with four other teams waiting to claim that final 8th spot should they blink. Against a side that has shipped 43 goals this season, the 1.8/1 price for a Chiefs win may be warranted. A scoring draw (1-1 is priced at 6/1) may be one last shrewd piece of business for the business.

1 – Chiefs have won just one of their last five season-ending games, drawing and losing two since 2019.
