Stellenbosch (6th) v Kaizer Chiefs (4th)
A Baxter-less Chiefs travel to Cape Town this weekend looking for 3 points that will reignite their bid for 2nd place on the log. For all his shortcomings, Stuart Baxter’s side had a good record away from home – no team has won more points on the road than them all campaign (22). So there’s something going for them on that front. Yet, Stellenbosch will be smelling blood in this one and could secure a league double if they pull off another win. However, they have started the year slowly.
1 – Stellies have won just one league game in 2022, losing two and drawing four (the most draws of all sides).
They’ve also kept one clean sheet since the start of the year
TS Galaxy (14th) v Maritzburg (13th)
One would call this a relegation six-pointer if it wasn’t for the fact that there are another two teams below this pair. However, with 15th and 16th also playing each other this weekend, whoever wins this has a chance to pull away from the crowd. TS Galaxy are slight favourites to win, mainly because Maritzburg’s away form has been inglorious. One win away all season, and that came against bottom club Baroka. However, they’ll take heart when they look at Galaxy’s leaky defence.
0 – No team has conceded more than Galaxy this season (35, level with Arrows); and no team has conceded more home goals this year than them (8).
Marumo (11th) v SuperSport (8th)
Marumo Gallants have won as many home points this year (8) as they did before Christmas (8). However, they’ve achieved that with half as many games played (4 v 8). To call their home ground a fortress would be a stretch, but they are unbeaten at home and have also conceded just one home goal in 2022. Superpsort are coming in on the back of a great win against Chiefs – a result that may have been crucial in the job changes at Naturena.
1 – Supersport have failed to score just once this year, scoring in six consecutive games – their joint-best record all campaign.
Royal AM (2nd) v AmaZulu (7th)
A KZN derby will round off the action on Sunday afternoon. The pressure is off AmaZulu for now, after successive league wins. A 3rd win would result in their best winning run all campaign. They aren’t the most lethal team – in the last 8 games, Usuthu have scored Over 1.5 goals just once. However, five clean sheets in eight games are quite impressive. Yet, that will be tested when they travel to one of the most entertaining sides in the division.
29 – Only Sundowns (35) have won more points at home than Royal AM (29).
