Wednesday

Supersport United (8) v Cape Town City (9)

Supersport desperately needs the win following a run of three consecutive home losses. Gordon Igesund was the coach the last time they lost 3 in a row (2015/16) and Pitso Mosimane was coach the only other time this happened (2005/6). There are aggravating circumstances, but the record books will simply reflect 4 losses in a row at home should they fall again here. But Tembo will look at his visitor’s away record and feel less nervous.

1 – City has won just one of their last ten away league games (D5 L4), with eight of those played under Tinkler.

What is more worrying is that they have failed to score in eight of those 10 matches.

Kaizer Chiefs (6) v Maritzburg United (12)

The news from the PSL that they were not satisfied with Kaizer Chief’s request to postpone their two matches will come as a blow to anyone associated with them. Chiefs created enough against Royal AM but were undone by the first-half penalty in the end (the xG merchants say 2.6xG was their highest xG in a league match this season). They now host a Maritzburg side who are blowing cold and cold at a crucial stage of the season. Ernst Middendorp’s side is winless in nine but seems to find this fixture favourable of late.

2 – Maritzburg has been victorious on each of their last two visits to Kaizer Chiefs, having won just twice in the same fixture between 2005 and 2019.

It’s also worth noting that in their last 21 games, Maritzburg has scored Over 1.5 goals just once.

Thursday

Mamelodi Sundowns (1) v Marumo Gallants (11)

The champions will be looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season against AmaZulu when they host Marumo Gallants in their last game of the year. Gallants were unlucky not to grab a point in their last away game v Pirates and will have their work cut out when they face a wounded lion on Thursday. Gallants have looked a different outfit to the one that was thumped 4-0 in early November by Sundowns since Malesela arrived. Even with the Pirate’s defeat, only Sundowns have won more points than them since Malesela arrived. A tired Sundowns may be the perfect target for at least a point to round off the year.

60 – This will be Sundown’s 60th match this year, the most they have ever played in a calendar year in their PSL history.

Orlando Pirates (2) v AmaZulu (3)

The last game of the year will be a mammoth battle for 2nd place at Christmas. AmaZulu seems to have clicked into gear in the last few matches, first snapping the record streak of draws and then stringing back-to-back wins for the first time since late April/early May.

They travel to a Pirates side who were blown away by the same Sundowns side that AmaZulu just dispatched. Whether Benni has a working formula against his former team remains to be seen. It won’t be easy, coming against a Pirates side who have lost once in eleven matches at home.

1 – AmaZulu has won just once away to Pirates in their PSL history, drawing 6 and losing on the other 11 visits.

Should he win, Benni will become the first AmaZulu coach to beat Chiefs, Pirates, and Sundowns in the same year. He seems to have a knack for the big games, and AmaZulu has the momentum. Yet, these are also the two teams with the most draws this season – 9 for Pirates, 12 for the visitors.
