PSV winger Cody Gakpo became the first high-profile signing after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar when the Dutch side announced Liverpool had signed him for £35m in a five-and-a-half-year deal.

According to , the figure could rise to £45m with add-ons.

Gakpo starred for Louis Van Gaal’s side as they reached the quarter-final stage earlier this month, scoring three goals in five matches. Manchester United was rumoured to be interested in signing the 23-year-old who has been part of the PSV youth setup since eight-years-old.

The right-footed player was named Dutch Player of the Year last season after netting 12 goals and creating 12 assists in 27 matches. He finished the season with 23 goals in 51 appearances, averaging almost a goal every second match.

Jürgen Klopp will be delighted to use the rapid winger from the get-go after the Merseyside club has been without Diogo Jota and Luis Díaz due to injuries. Gakpo offers Klopp’s team speed off either flank and could feature in their FA Cup third-round tie against Wolves on January 7.

Gakpo was in red-hot form for PSV before heading to Qatar for the World Cup, he led the Eredivisie’s scoring chart with nine goals from 14 matches. Despite only being 23 years old, Gakpo was given the captaincy by PSV manager Ruud van Nistelrooy and joined a Liverpool squad with the likes of compatriot Virgil van Dyk.

The Dutch player said: “I think this is a great club for me to come in and try to show what I can do and try to help the team to achieve more beautiful moments that they already did in the past years. I think for me personally it’s also good to develop here and there’s a lot of great players here who I can learn a lot of things from.”

Liverpool coach Klopp added: “It really is great news for us that we have been able to do it and I have to say it has been a fantastic job by everyone involved, especially Julian .
