FRANK LAMPARD: A CHELSEA LEGEND

Why is Frank Lampard a Chelsea legend?

FRANK LAMPARD: A CHELSEA LEGEND

Chelsea have named former midfielder Frank Lampard as their manager on a three-year deal.

The 41-year-old Lampard has left Championship side Derby County to take over at a club where he spent 13 years as a player.

Lampard led Derby to the Championship play-off final in his first season as a manager, they lost to Aston Villa.

He succeeds Maurizio Sarri, who left the Bridge to take charge of Italian champions Juventus.

Why is Lampard so revered? Let’s have a look…

Lampard signed for Chelsea from West Ham in June 2001 for £11 million. At that stage, it was the second-highest fee Chelsea had spent on a player and the most by any club in the Premier League for a midfielder.

He made his debut on 19 August 2001 against Newcastle. He stayed with Chelsea for 13 seasons until 2014.

The durable and reliable Lampard played 648 games for the club, 593 of them starts. Only three players have played more times for the club.

Lampard is Chelsea’s all-time leading goalscorer with 211 goals. He broke Bobby Tambling’s record when he netted his 203rd goal away at Aston Villa on 11 May 2013.

Lampard is also Chelsea’s all-time top-flight scorer. He hit the back of the net 147 times in the Premier League. He is also the top all-time FA Cup scorer with 26 goals and the second-highest scorer in Europe with 25 (Didier Drogba on 34).

At Chelsea, he reached double figures for goals in 10 consecutive seasons, and 20 goals or more in five seasons in a row. Incredible stats considering he is a midfielder.
