Belgium and Germany’s World Cup exit came as a shock, Belgium ranks number 2 in the World FIFA rankings, while Germany ranks number 11 coming into . There were a lot of expectations for both teams considering their history and the quality of their players, however, they didn’t live up to them.

The Red Devils started the competition on a high with a win on their opener against Canada, however, they didn’t display a good convincing football considering their position on the world FIFA rankings.

Belgium needed a win in their final game against Croatia for them to advance into the knockout stage, but the Croatians held them to a 0-0 draw finishing 3rd in group F.

Here was the starting line-up for Belgium:

Belgium starting lineup (3-4-2-1 :1-Courtois — 19-Dendoncker, 2-Alderweireld, 5-Vertonghen, — 15-Meunier, 6-Witsel 7-De Bruyne, 21-Castagne —  17-Trossard, 11-Carrasco — 14-Mertens

A repeat of what happened in the 2018 World Cup edition, had repeated itself for the 2014 World Champions. They started on a back foot after losing their first game to Japan, went to play a draw against Spain, and were under enormous pressure coming to their last game against Costa Rica.

Germany starting lineup (4-2-3-1 : 1-Neuer (GK) — 6-Kimmich, 15-Sule, 2-Rudiger, 3-Raum — 21-Gundogan, 8-Goretzka — 10-Gnabry, 14-Musiala, 19-Sane — 13-Muller
