It’s that time of the week again where we run through a selection of the most exciting matches taking place this weekend and offer our best bets and value picks.
Udinese v Chelsea (Friday)
The final match of Chelsea’s pre-season comes against Udinese on Friday at the Dacia Arena, Udine in Italy. The Premier League giants have endured an underwhelming pre-season and Thomas Tuchel will be hoping for a positive reaction from his players. With N’Golo Kante and Armando Broja returning to the squad and Kalidou Koulibaly set to get more minutes, the Blues are confidently tipped to win.
Liverpool v Man City (Saturday)
FA Cup winners Liverpool take on Premier League champions Manchester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday in the Community Shield. There will be no shortage of quality on display come kick-off, with all eyes on Darwin Nunez and Erling Haaland in what will be the duo’s first game in the United Kingdom.
Man United v Atletico Madrid (Saturday)
Manchester United continue their pre-season preparations with a friendly against Atletico Madrid on Saturday. United’s three-game winning streak in pre-season came to a halt after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Aston Villa. With Atleti’s pre-season schedule just starting, Erik ten Hag’s side will be more match ready and should get back to winning ways.
Tottenham v As Roma (Saturday)
Tottenham travel to Israel to face Roma and their former boss Jose Mourinho in a pre-season friendly on Saturday. There is a lot of hype around Spurs this season as Antonio Conte has truly been backed in the transfer market. But Mourinho is assembling a team that could spring more than a few surprises.
Dortmund v Antalyaspor (Saturday)
Borussia Dortmund and Antalyaspor face off in their final pre-season friendly on Saturday, with both sides desperate to snap two-game losing streaks. Dortmund faced tougher opponents in Valencia and Villarreal, while Antalyaspor were well beaten by Bochum and failed to score a goal against Paderborn. With the game played in Dortmund, the Bundesliga side will fancy their chances of victory.
Real Madrid v Juventus (Sunday)
Real Madrid and Juventus will continue their preparations for the 2022-23 campaign with a pre-season friendly in California on Sunday morning. Real are searching for their first win in pre-season after losing 1-0 to Barcelona and drawing with Club America. Juve, meanwhile, as expected saw off Guadalajara 2-0 and played out a 2-2 draw with Barcelona.
New York RB v Barcelona (Sunday)
Barcelona takes on New York RB in a pre-season friendly on Sunday at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ. Xavi Hernandez has bulked up his squad with the high-profile additions of Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and soon-to-be Jules Kounde, and should be confident of seeing off a New York RB side who come off a 5-1 defeat to Orlando City in the US Open Cup.
Man United v Royo Vallecano (Sunday)
Manchester United wrap up their pre-season with a friendly against Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford on Sunday. United have had a fine pre-season under their new manager Erik ten Hag and will look to carry their good form into their season opener against Brighton. For Vallecano, the game presents a great opportunity to test themselves ahead of a daunting trip to Barcelona.
Marseille v AC Milan (Sunday)
Marseille will welcome AC Milan to the Orange Velodrome for a pre-season friendly on Sunday. This will be a tough test for the French giants against the Serie A champions who come into this game off a thumping 5-0 win over Wolfsberger. Marseille, meanwhile, are winless in their last three friendlies, suffering defeats at the hands of Norwich City and Middlesbrough before drawing with Real Betis last time out.
Almere City v Ajax (Sunday)
Ajax Amsterdam takes on Eerste Divisie side Almere City in their final pre-season game on Sunday. The Dutch champions are overwhelming favourites to see off the minnows, and you can expect them to do so with minimal fuss.
