Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah won gold in the women’s 200m, but Christine Mboma of Namibia’s run was just as heroic as she picked up silver. Mboma and compatriot Beatrice Masilingi had been denied the chance to compete in the 400m, their preferred event, due to controversial testosterone regulations.
Shaun Maswanganyi narrowly missed out on a final spot in the men’s 200m, while fellow South Africans Clarence Munyai and Anaso Jobodwana also fell short.
In men’s football, Brazil and Spain were made to sweat for their semi-final wins, but eventually got the better of Mexico and Japan respectively — Brazil in a penalty shootout and Spain thanks to a Marco Asensio extra-time winner.
