WIMBLEDON 2019 PREVIEW: MEN’S DRAW

WIMBLEDON 2019 PREVIEW: MEN’S DRAW

We preview tennis’ biggest and most iconic event. The only Grand Slam on grass, Wimbledon 2019 begins on Monday.

As usual, the event is happening at the All England Lawn Tennis Club between 1st July and 14th July.

There are 128 men and 128 women players competiting, with only 64 of them being seeded. The winners will net £2,350,000, while the runner up pockets £1,175,000.

We take a look at the favourites and who you can put your money on.

The defending champion has been on a superb run of form ever since beating Kevin Anderson in the final last years at SW19.

As impressively as he finished last year, he continued in the same vain this year. He won a record seventh Australian Open, by beating Rafael Nadal in straight sets.

His most grand slam appearance saw him knocked out in the final four at Roland Garros. The loss ended his chances of completing a double career grand slam.

Djoko could be a good bet to retain his Wimbledon title this year. He’s already won four championships on grass.

BET:

You cannot talk about Wimbledon without mentioning Roger Federer. It is now 2 decades since he made his debut at SW19.  It’s 16 years since he won his first major title on grass.

The 37-year-old will be the second seed at the tournament after he won in Halle last week. That’s huge news because he will circumvent Djokovic until the final, although old-time rival Nada could be a roadblock in the final four.

Although Swiss maestro lost in the semi-finals at Roland Garros, it proved he can still go the distance in a major tournament although even though clay is not is preferred surface.

BET:

Nadal is on a high after winning a record-breaking 12th title at Roland Garros.

The Spaniard has endured a mixed start to the season, finishing runner-up at the Australian Open and then sustaining an injury.

He was also slow to get going on the clay courts as well, losing at Monte Carlo and Barcelona before falling to Stefanos Tsitsipas in his hometown tournament, Madrid.

However, he redeemed himself to win in Rome, beating Novak Djokovic in the final, before his record-breaking win at Round Garros.

Now the 33-year-old is the third seed at Wimbledon Djokovic and Federer, meaning he will face one of them in the semis – he has not been to a Wimbledon final since 2011.

Look out for Dominic Thiem, Kevin Anderson, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev.
