THE SCOTTISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP BETTING

The run of Irish Open, Scottish Open and The Open in a space of three weeks may point to a few hints of a potential winner.

It’s no doubt that Links golf holds a certain appeal – to the weekend golfer and to the seasoned pro. Have a look at the field “across the pond” this week and compare that to those attending the Scottish Open and you’ll clearly see the latter is the one to watch.

To win two weeks in a row is tough. To do it with No 2 being a Major is near-impossible. And that’s despite playing a similar layout the week before. In fact, only Phil Mickelson has done it in the recent past.

Are we saying scrap any trend between the current Rolex Series stretch and next week’s Open Championship? No, not at all.

You’ll see in the list below, how many of the same names appear either on the winner’s list or having fared well in one of the preceding weeks in a short time-space. Looking back you might’ve picked up a few winners with Rickie Fowler in Scotland or Henrik Stenson at The Open but such is the clarity of hindsight.

That said, let’s have a look at who to watch this week and more importantly at Royal Portrush in a week.

This is the obvious one. Why? He’s playing some of the most consistent golf, he is a former Irish Open winner and a perennial challenger. Rory will break his Major drought soon – he’s winless since the 2014 PGA Championship – and has been eyeing next’s week home Major for some time.

The Open record: Finished runner-up last year at Carnoustie and inside the top five at Royal Birkdale

The fiery Spaniard has been in tremendous. Ran it close at Valderrama – another good outing as it ranks as one of the hardest courses on any tour – before romping to his second Irish Open win last week. He sits out Scotland which means that he won’t have the trouble of trying to win three in a row. Be wary of leaving him out of your selections despite his poor Open record.

BET:

Phenomenal record at the Dunhill Links which is played over three Links courses in Scotland plus his names shows up Scottish Open a few times. Finished T5 in the 2016 Open Championship to add to his specialist qualities on the courses over the next fortnight. Or skip him and go for countryman Eddie Pepperell, who was inside the top 5 last week and has three top sevens in his last four starts in Scotland.

BET:

Simply a case of horses for courses. Scotland native that has excelled in the Irish Open but has a poor Open record which means he could be the one to watch this week rather.
