2019 - Do It Again
Jockey: Richard Fourie
Trainer: Justin Snaith
Sandwiched between back-to-back Durban July wins, Do It Again picked up the 2019 title just ahead of Soqrat, Rainbow Bridge and Legal Eagle, who was looking for a 4th plate in a row.
2018 - Legal Eagle
Jockey: Anton Marcus
Trainer: Sean Tarry
The last of Legal Eagle’s treble came in tight fashion. It was also won in new owners silks, the yellow with purple spots of Braam van Huyssteen. As odds on favourite, jockey Anton Marcus had to time it just right, fighting off a fast finishing Copper Force into 2nd. An absolute thrilling finish.
2017 - Legal Eagle
Jockey: Anton Marcus
Trainer: Sean Tarry
‘The Eagle has landed’ – one of the most commanding Grade 1 wins you’ll see. Legal Eagle stamped his dominance of the race with a strong finish skipping clear of long time rival Captain America.
2016 - Legal Eagle
Jockey: Anton Marcus
Trainer: Sean Tarry
The first of the Eagle’s treble came as a lesser fancied runner. Justin Snaith held the cards in this one with Futura and Legislate topping the board, Tarry and Marcus’s handy tactics made it impossible for others to catch him at the close.
2015 - Futura
Jockey: Bernard Fayd’Herbe
Trainer: Brett Crawford
Undoubtedly the most thrilling finish in recent times, Bernie brought Futura from last to steam roll home in 2015. After settling at the rear it took some expert horsemanship to navigate gap after gap. After hitting the front inside the last furlong Futura managed to hold off the fast finishing Triple Crown winner Louis The King.
2014 - Capetown Noir
Jockey: Karl Neisius
Trainer: Dean Kannemeyer
A clinical rail run from King Karl got Capetown Noir into a comfortable lead in the closing stages, and he wasn’t for the catching winning comfortably by 1.25 lengths. This would be its last win as a racehorse, finishing its career at the end of 2014.
2013 - Variety Club
Jockey: Anton Marcus
Trainer: Joey Ramsden
This win was one of many massive highlights in this horse’s career. It was well fancied for this race depiste having to overcome a terrible draw. It duly obliged however, pinging the gates and lead from the front to win by over 2 lengths.
2012 - Gimmethegreenlight
Jockey: Pierre Strydom
Trainer: Justin Snaith
Striker Strydom had to mow down superstar Variety Club to get up late and win in 2012. It was a storming finish after a tricky mid-pack position for them. Another memorable winner thats gone on to produce some impressive offspring in his retirement.
2011 - Mother Russia
Jockey: Anton Marcus
Trainer: Mike de Kock
After keeping Mother Russia in contention all race long, the Windrush mare showed her true class from a fair way out. A more convincing win you’ll struggle to find, and the 2.25 length victory doesn’t give enough credit to this win.
2010 - Pocket Power
Jockey: Bernard Fayd’Herbe
Trainer: Mike Bass
Pocket Power reached the unmatched mark of 4 Queens Plates in 2010, having dominated the race since 2006. Bernie kept the Jet Master gelding in the clear to give him the best chance of chasing down the leaders when it mattered most. The celebration on the line summed up the career of a true great in South African racing.
