Our 3 best bets at Sha Tin for 17 May
Race 5 – WONG MA TEI HANDICAP (DIV II) (CLASS 4)
on paper is a mundane Class 4, 14-runner handicap 1400m. They can however, be great places to spot rising talent, with unexposed younger horses pitted against declining veterans.
– Zac Purton gets the ride on the one-time runner, which immediately adds significance to its chances. Going off at 45/1 last time it clearly went under the radar with Matthew Chadwick aboard – it ran a fair cracker in 3rd, 1.5 lengths off the winner. It will have likely progressed and with a peach draw I’m backing Zac to deliver as he so often does.
Race 7 – SHUI LONG WO HANDICAP (CLASS 3)
What looks to be one of the standout rides on the card comes in . There are some consistent knockers in this Class 3 handicap over 1600m, but based on form there’s really only a couple to choose from.
– A beaten favourite last time out, Joao Moreira was left a bit too much to do down the straight and ultimately ran out of race. This time round he’s drawn mid-pack, and will likely get to the front and stay there. If something is going to catch him, it’ll come as a shock from off the pace, not something Moreira often concedes.
Race 8 – HOI HA HANDICAP (CLASS 2)
It’s the feature race on Sunday’s card, is an 11-runner handicap over 1800m. There are two standout horses with some ding-dong history between them. They meet again and no surprises here, we’re rating the likely underdog.
– Antoine Hamelin is a fresh face in Hong Kong making waves. Despite our fancies coming second best to SUPER OASIS in recent encounters, it’s about time for a reversal of fortune. He finally gets a cracking draw of 2, having had to fight with wide draw in the past. SUPER OASIS has also just changed yards and look likely to run with blinkers on. Whilst the new Ricky Yiu stable is in hot form, this coupled with the equipment change opens a door for ENRICHMENT to pop up.
