Preview

The mighty Chennai Super Kings take on a revamped Delhi Capitals in the 7th match of this edition of IPL. While Delhi will come into the game riding high on confidence after they ended up on the winning side of a very close encounter against Punjab, CSK will look to find their mojo after a rather one-sided defeat against Rajasthan Royals in their second game of the season.

After a thumping start to the season, CSK faltered against RR and it exposed a lot of flaws that they would like to fix as they take the field against Delhi, mainly in the bowling department. All of their bowlers, especially spinners, went for plenty of runs and looked clueless against a fierce RR batting line-up. Lungi Ngidi gave away 30 runs in the final over, all thanks to a superb cameo by Jofra Archer that somewhat made a big difference in the result of the match. Sam Curran picked up 3 wickets but barring him, there were hardly any positives for CSK in their bowling.

Never for one instance did it look like that CSK were in the position to win the game even after a solid start by Watson and Vijay and with Faf Du Plessis doing all he could but getting no support from the other end. Chennai missed the services of Ambati Rayudu immensely who was left out due to his hamstring injury. They held back Dhoni for way too long – he did hit three back-to-back sixes in the final over but by then it was too late and the harm was done.

They narrowed down the margin of loss to mere 16 runs but did that with questionable intent. CSK will like to rectify all the errors they made and will look to come back stronger and get back on the winning track.

Delhi Capitals have had a rather unusual start to their campaign but luckily emerged victorious in the super over against Punjab. The only team in the IPL yet to feature in the finals, DC will look to do all things right under the leadership of a very young and phenomenal Shreyas Iyer. Their top-order looked shaky in the game against Punjab with nobody in the top 3 managing to reach double figures but good solid knocks by Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, followed by a display of masterclass by Marcus Stoinis helped them reach a respectable total.

Stoinis was a revelation for the Delhi side as he emerged a hero by saving 1 run off three balls in the final over that eventually led to a super over. The injury of Ravichandran Ashwin has raised questions as he looked in fine touch and losing him will dampen Delhi’s chances. But the form of Kagiso Rabada and Axar Patel is a positive for Delhi and they will look to bank on it as they lock horns with Chennai in their second game of the season.

Key Players to Watch Out For

Faf Du Plessis: Faf Du Plessis has been CSK’s most consistent batsman in this edition of IPL scoring 130 runs at a staggering strike rate of 160.49. Also, brilliant in the field, he will be a trump card for CSK and CSK’s fortune in the match will highly depend on his performance.

Sam CurranThe English all-rounder has been one of CSK’s most impressive performers this IPL both with the ball and the bat. His ability to chip in important wickets at crucial times and deliver important cameos makes him a key player to watch out for. He has taken 4 wickets and scored 35 runs in the two games that Chennai has played so far.

Shreyas Iyer: This young Indian talent is widely known for his batting prowess and even though he couldn’t convert his solid start into a big score in the first game against Punjab, Delhi’s batting will highly depend on him. His consistency with the bat and ability to lead from the front makes him an indispensable asset to his side and all eyes will be on him to get Delhi over the line and have a successful campaign this season.
