KAIZER CHIEFS ARE ONE LOSS AWAY FROM A CRISIS

Guest columnist Thabang Kgeledi looks at the reasons Kaizer Chiefs are one game away from a crisis.

Kaizer Chiefs have only won three of their 11 league games, they have been eliminated from a cup competition, lost to their arch rivals Orlando Pirates and they are worse than they were last season. One more loss could be the straw that breaks Bobby Motaung’s back.

After the resignation of Steve Komphela and the appointment of Giovanni Solinas it was supposed to be a new dawn for Amakhosi. However, they now find themselves in a worse position than they were under the bald-headed wordsmith.

Kaizer Chiefs are on a three-season cup-less run and you’d be a rich or a foolish man to bet that it will end the streak this season.

Saturday sees Amakhosi go up against Supersport United in a Telkom knockout quarterfinals. A loss and from this season second cup competition will surely mean it’s time to press the panic button and for Solinas to appoint more security.

Chiefs are playing the worst football I’ve seen them play. And that’s saying something because I watched them last season. Their team doesn’t look cohesive it, their attack is disjointed, and it seems some players don’t grasp what their role in the team is.

If a team isn’t playing well the knee-jerk reaction is to look at their coaching. Their head coach Giovanni Solinas recons the issues aren’t as big of a deal as I suggested.

After their 2-1 loss to Orlando Pirates last weekend in the Soweto derby, he told the club’s , “We are working hard on developing the mental strength of the players. Playing for Kaizer Chiefs is not easy, one needs to have a strong character. It’s about the players managing the pressure of playing for this big club. To be able to win trophies, we need players with strong mentality and character.”

He seems to think the player’s mental strength is the problem, not his tactical nous or lack thereof.

AIn another interview, he compared the Soweto derby to the Free State derby, “I don’t know about this , but, for example, I participated in the derby in Free State – against Bloemfontein. I participated in two derbies and won two derbies,”

“You can check, please. Free State Stars versus Celtic – 1-0, and also in the second derby we won the derby. Guys, a derby is a derby. It’s a special game,”

“We lost this Derby, but Pirates was not dominating the Derby. Yes, Pirates scored two goals, they exploited the situation and details but the performance of my team in the second half was okay,”

1. The Free State Derby is nothing like the Soweto derby.

2. He must delusional if he thinks Orlando Pirates didn’t dominate Kaizer Chiefs.

3. Kaizer Chiefs supporters should be worried.

As a matter of fact, Supersport United fans are should be concerned because we saw what happened the last time Kaizer Chiefs supporters didn’t have things going their way:

Supersport United are a tough team and would like nothing more than to have Kaizer Chiefs supporters riot. This weekends game may make or break Giovanni Solinas tenure and Amakhosi and Kaizer Chiefs chances for silverware this season.
