GGG vs ALVAREZ II: A SEQUEL WORTH THE HYPE

After a heavily disputed first meeting, the big-hitting duo will take to the ring again to prove who really is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. BET Central’s Brenton Chelin takes a closer look and tries to split ‘em.

It’s been little over a year since the two fighters bludgeoned their way to a controversial split decision and the 12 months that followed has done little to erase the bad blood.

Golovkin had every right to feel aggrieved by the judges decision, having been the more active fighter throughout the fight, landing a majority of the punches while absorbing everything Alvarez had to offer.

Canelo did manage to land with 42% of his power punches and showcased some good defence to take the fight the distance, but very few ringside observers were in agreement with Adelaide Byrd’s 118-110 verdict in his favour.

The original rematch was set for May this year, before Alvarez failed a drug test throwing the entire match in doubt. The Mexican has served his subsequent six month ban, all the while maintaining the positive test for Clenbuterol was the result of contaminated meat. However, his opponent has his doubts and has been very outspoken in his views of the ban.

Canelo’s main weakness has been his tendency to gas late in fights and many believe this to be the reason for using the drug to enhance his performance. Golovkin may be a year older, but his ability to manage the fight and drag Canelo into deep water could prove the difference here.

Golovkin is renowned for having a granite chin and has never hit the canvas as either an amateur or a pro. Alvarez landed some thunderous shots during the first meeting. GGGs reaction – a shrug and a smile.

Golovkin may have 33 KO’s to his name, but two of his last three fights have gone the distance. At the age of 36, his trademark punching power has started to wain in recent years, making the on the fight to go the distance a solid if unspectacular bet. You could go one better by backing him to win by Decision at .

There’s more than a few opinions floating around BET Central at the moment. Some punters believe GGG is out to prove a point and will look to finish things early rather than risk a judges’ decision. If you’re in agreement, then the at 14.00 could be the punt for you.

It’s a long shot, but the odds of a draw to 22.50. Given how close the fight is expected to be, the payoff might be worth the gamble.
